Newcastle University

UNEW, specifically the Newcastle University Institute for Ageing (NUIA), encompasses several research groups working on different aspects of fundamental biology of ageing with interrelated and integrated foci on mitochondria, inflammation, oxidative stress, epigenetics, telomeres and cell senescence.

The research facilities provide a wide range of state-of-the-art equipment necessary for this application, including in-house mice facilities and extensive technical expertise in maintaining ageing mice colonies. The coordinator of UNEW in RESETageing project is Dr. Viktor Korolchuk. Dr. Viktor has made important contributions in the area of intracellular protein trafficking and degradation pathways (in particular autophagy) and he is interested to investigate how perturbations of protein trafficking and degradation contribute to ageing. Dr. Viktor has been running a highly active research group at the Newcastle University Institute for Ageing.

Work in his Laboratory is funded by BBSRC, MRC, Royal Society and Procter & Gamble. He is executive board member of the British Society for Research on Ageing. UNEW will be further represented in RESETageing by Dr Thomas von Zglinicki who has research interests in the cellular and molecular signaling pathways connecting DNA damage responses with mitochondrial function and metabolism; Dr Gavin Richardson who has research interests in the area of myocardial senescence and regeneration and Dr. Laura Greaves who has research interests on the role of mitochondria DNA mutations in ageing stem cells and cancer.
